How Do We Know We Aren't Going to Get Shot? is the second episode of The Amazing Race: Family Edition.

Several Teams misinterpret a clue, confusing one city landmark for another.

Racers are in awe when they find themselves in the middle of a full-scale Civil War reenactment during their travels. After ignoring a suggestion to refuel the car, tempers flare when one team's car runs dangerously low on gas and there is no gas station in sight. On another team, one family member is plagued with fatigue, making a task nearly impossible to finish.[2]

Teams must drive themselves to York and find Shoe House Road to search for the Haines Shoe House, where they will find their next clue.

Teams must drive themselves to Washington, District of Columbia and find the Reflecting Pool outside of the United States Capitol building to find their next clue.

Teams must go up 3rd Street and find a limousine where an unknown contact will give them a briefcase. Once they have the briefcase, they can drive to Tidal Basin to find their next clue.

The team member assigned to perform this Roadblock would have to search for a spy for carrying a briefcase identical to their own, with one of 50 people walking in the area around the Tidal Basin but only 10 of whom were confirmed spies. They have to whisper a code phrase ("The sky is blue") and the spy would reply with a countersign phrase ("The sea is green"). Once they have found one of the spies, they exchange their briefcase with the spy's briefcase to receive their next clue.

The Roadblock performers per team are underlined:

Teams must drive themselves to Middleburg, Virginia and find the Welbourne Manor to search for their next clue.

Choice A: Heat of the Battle
Teams have to pick up a stretcher and enter the battlefield. They have to pick up and transport five wounded soldiers back to the medical tent. Once they've transported five soldiers, teams must grab a Civil War flag.

The Aiello, Bransen, Gaghan, Godlewski, Linz, and Paolo Families chose this task.

Choice B: Heat of the Night
Teams have to roll a keg of kerosene across the field to a table with 20 oil lamps. They have to properly fill up each oil lamp. Once the quartermaster has checked their work, teams must grab a Civil War flag.

The Rogers, Schroeder, and Weaver Families chose this task.

After completing either side of the Detour, teams with their Civil War flags must find the Pit Stop in a nearby field to check in.

For coming in first place, the Weaver Family won a trip to the Fairmont Southampton, in Bermuda provided by Travelocity.
